PARENT INFORMATION

Woden Little Athletics is run entirely by volunteer parents. On competition days, there can be 200 or more children taking part in four or five events each. With twelve age groups each for boys and girls, this can be a colossal undertaking.

Parents must be prepared to help each Saturday morning to ensure everything runs smoothly and children obtain the maximum benefit from their events. We require parents to assist with a variety of tasks ranging from assisting at an event , being the manager of an age group, being a time keeper or helping in the canteen. Children appreciate the presence of their parents as officials. It is a family undertaking and it is an enjoyable and rewarding task if everyone does their share. You don't need any previous experience to be an official and there are a number of qualified and more experienced officials to help you out. Also, during the first few weeks of the season, familiarisation sessions for parents will be held to explain what is involved in officiating in the various track and field events.

A roster system will also be used for ACTLAA Carnivals. Each club is expected to provide a quota of officials for each carnival and the Club requires a parent of each child participating at these carnivals to volunteer to officiate for at least two hours. In addition to conducting Club competition, there are a number of coordinating roles and off field duties that have to be done. These include Committee positions such as President and Treasurer and looking after fund raising, registrations, recording performances, awards, equipment, uniforms, the officials roster and the canteen.

Uniforms

The Woden Little Athletics uniform consists of:

A gold t-shirt with green trim and "WODEN" on the back plus emerald shorts, bike pants or scungees. Alternatively, girls can choose to wear a one or two piece emerald green and gold bodysuit. The uniform is encouraged, but not required for regular Club meetings.

The registration number and age patch must be worn at every Club meeting on Saturday morning. The registration number must be sewn or pinned to the front of the t-shirt and the age patch sewn or pinned on the left shoulder. (Note: the patches should be ironed before sewing to set the colours).

We suggest that you sew the registration patch on three sides, leaving the top open to create a pocket where children can keep their results tickets after events. It is compulsory to wear the club uniform with registration number and age patches for ACTLAA inter-club com- petitions and carnivals.

Uniform Prices:

Clubs uniforms are available for each week at the club at the following prices, for Season 2008-09:

Shoes:

Shoes are compulsory for all events. This is particularly important for the Shot Put, Discus, Javelin, Hurdles and Triple Jump. For safety reasons, children will not be permitted to compete in these events without shoes. Athletes in the Under 9 to Under 17 age groups may wear spikes. The maximum length of the spikes permitted on grass is 9mm. At Bruce Stadium, it is 6mm. Athletes wearing spikes in track events MUST put them on in their lanes at the start of the race and MUST REMOVE them at the finish line before they leave their lane. Any infringement of this rule will result in the athlete being forbidden to wear spikes.

Spikes may be worn only in running events up to and including the 400 Metres and in the Hurdles, Long Jump, Triple Jump and High Jump. In jumping events, those athletes wearing spikes must make sure that they do not endanger themselves or their fellow competitors while waiting for their turn. The official at these events is entitled to ask athletes to remove their spikes, if the official thinks that they are causing a problem

Sun Smart:

All children must wear a hat and should apply sunscreen to exposed skin on arms, face, neck and legs. Parents are strongly encouraged to set an example for the children.

Lost Property

Please mark all your child's belongings. There is a lost property basket in the equipment shed, which will be overflowing with misplaced items by the end of the season. Please check there for any missing items.
